TERROR ON POM POM ISLAND SABAH

A Taiwanese tourist was shot dead at Pom Pom island resort, early yesterday morning. The 57 years old Taiwanese was shot twice while his wife was believed to have been kidnapped by the gunmen from the water villa.

There were 54 other tourists staying at the Resort at the time of the incident. The Police is still investigating to determine the motive of the shooting and kidnapping.

Pom Pom island is one of the six small coral reef islands near Tun Sakaran Marine Park in the Celebes Sea about 30 km North East of Semporna town, Sabah. The island is 2.3 km in circumference at the high tide line with a fringing coral reef 4 km long. It is a popular destination for scuba divers and nature lovers.

This is one of the shooting and kidnapping incidents in recent years. the most terrifying one was in 2000, when heavily armed gunmen took 21 people from Sipadan, a scuba dive resort nearby. All of them were released after an unknown amount of ransom was paid months later.

Meanwhile Malaysian armed forces have beefed up the security to avoid any further incident.
