RARE PYGMY ELEPHANTS FOUND DEAD IN BORNEO

Horrible news - the first in Borneo wildlife history.  Within 30 days, thirteen endangered Borneo pygmy elephants were found dead near a logging camp and an oil palm plantation not far from the Gunung Rara Forest Reserve, about 130km from Tawau. Two highly decomposed Pygmy carcasses were found in early January this year while eleven were found a few days ago.
However, a calf was still alive and trying to wake up the dead mother when an investigation team arrived at the scene.

There  were more than seven females and three males ranging from four to twenty years old, believed to be from the same family group according to the wildlife department's senior veterinarian.

It was believed that all of them died after consuming poisonous substances as postmortems showed that they suffered severe haemorrhages and ulcers in their gastrointestinal tracts. Poaching has been ruled out as none of them had gunshot injuries. "We highly suspect that it might be some form of acute poisoning in something they had eaten." said the senior veterinarian.

Who could have done such a cruel act ? Could it be the owner of the Oil palm plantation or those working in the logging camp or some outside intruders? I hope that the "task force" set up by the relevant authorities in Sabah could do a comprehensive investigation and bring the culprits to book. It's high time that they recommend some action to prevent further loss as there are now fewer than 1,500 Borneo pygmy elephants left in the wild.

These Pygmy elephants are listed as rare and endangered as a result of losing their natural habitat to deforestation and human encroachment.

I had some memorable experience with these Pygmy elephants when I visited Tabin Wildlife Reserve and the lower Kinabtagan river in the past.
Watching them at Tabin Wildlife Reserve,

These lovely animals must be protected at all cost. The Sabah state Government should completely stop any further deforestation by withdrawing all logging licences and stop opening of new Oil palm plantations.

THE FABULOUS CUISINE OF SRI MELAKA !

Occasionally, my wife and I will go for a Malay dinner in Sri Melaka restaurant. We also have recommended many of our foreign friends to dine there.
Located at Kg. Air in Kota Kinabalu city just opposite of the Sedco hawker stalls, Sri Melaka  specializes in Malay and Nyonya cuisines with a mixture of Chinese. Traditional recipes with ingredients like Sambal belacan, curry powder, chilli, ginger, onion, pepper and assam are used in their cooking. The restaurant is air-conditioned with a seating capacity for about 160 people over 2 floors.
One of my favourite dishes is the  Malay style "mapo tofu" with minced meat in red chilli sauce.
Fried Chilli squids is one of their signature dishes.
Sabah vegetables with  Belacan, the most popular vegetable dish of the restaurant.
Another signature dish is the delicious "curry fish"
If you like hot stuff, try out their chilli prawns.

Apart from the above dishes, there are plenty more like,  Rendang beef, Assam fish head, deep fried squids, Nasi goreng , Ikan Goreng,  Laksa and many others including Chinese style Lemon chicken, clay pot bean curds, steamed fish and others!

To get there, it's very easy, just take a cab. All cab drivers know where it is.

FREE SEATS ON AIRASIA - BELIEVE IT OR NOT

Good news!!! AirAsia is offering 10,000 free air tickets for routes between Sabah, Sarawak and the Peninsula under the 1Malaysia Integration Programme  Have you got yours?

Believe it or not, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is now using AirAsia for his campaign on the implementation of the ‘1Malaysia Integration Programme’.The question is why now ? The Integration programme was there since day one back in 1963.

It is unbelievable that Air Asia is just throwing away a few million riggit to help the Prime Minister. Perhaps, in return, they could be given free usage of the Malaysian Airports' facilities or a better bargain for wavier of airport taxes and so on.

I tried to get a free seat by searching the AirAsia website but was not successful - NO FREE SEAT so far. Perhaps, my luck was not good! May be, these free seats are just for show or have already been allocated to the 10,000 people under the care of the Prime Minister. Who are these people? It's anybody's guess !.

BACK TO CROCKER RANGE AND WATER FALL

It has been more than 2 and a half years since I last drove to Tambunan over the Crocker Range "highway". It was almost mid-day when we dropped in at the Rafflesia Information Centre.

There was no Rafflesia but we found a rare and beautiful wild Ginger flower just before entering the Botanical Garden.
The entrance to the Park's Botanical Garden.
A sealed trail into the Garden.
From the Rafflesia Information Centre, we moved on to Tambunan.
The sprawling traditional padi fields in the the Tambunan valley.with the traditional padi fields.
The golden padi fields were ready for harvesting.
From the Tambunan junction, we headed for Mahua Waterfall. Part of the road was under repair because of a previous landslide.
The new sign board welcomed us to the Crocker Range National Park.
The reception building was also new.
The trails leading to the waterfall area has been upgraded with brick paved walkways.
Pictures showing the uneven trails during our last visit 2 and a half years ago.
It was a great feeling listening to the sound of the water flowing down the stream.
The waterfall was in sight after a 15-20 minutes easy walk.
The park now boasts a new shower and toilet facilities near the waterfall. The revisit was worthwhile with the improvement done on the trails and the facilities provided.
It was raining heavily on our way back to the main road. This portion of road was muddy but we managed to go through with our 4WD.
Our last stopped was in Tambunan township. The open market was deserted as it was raining heavily. We stayed for coffee and left for home.

MY FIRST, KL LCCT AND AIRASIA FLIGHT

Last Sunday, I flew AirAsia flight from Kuala Lumpur back to Kota kinabalu. It was my first experience using the KL LCCT and AirAsia.
I took a taxi from the City to KL LCCT which is much further than KLIA, at least by 20 km. On arrival at the LCCT, traffic was chaotic - I did not see any police controlling the traffic.
The whole terminal was crowded as I made my way to the departure area.
The "drop bag" counters were jammed with people. Fortunately, I did not have to queue since I have no check-in baggage.
 The departure hall.
"Massage" chairs are available in the departure hall but I did not see any body using them which cost RM1.00 for a 3 minutes or RM5 for 15 minutes.
While waiting for my departure flight, I took some pictures of the colourful Air Asia aircrafts arriving and departing.
There is no aerobridge or apron bus service for boarding. All passengers have to walk quite a distance to the aircrafts. There were some confusion during my boarding as there were 3 other flights boarding at the same time and the aircrafts were parked next to each other. The ground crew at the apron had a hard time directing the passengers.
The KL LCCT in the back ground as our aircraft was taxing to the runway.
 The A320 cabin is single-aisle with  3 + 3 seatings.
For passengers who did not purchase their meals at the time of booking, they could still do so  as per menu on board but subject to availability.
I opted for the Nasi Lemak.
The taste was OK and the portion was similar to those served by Malaysia Airlines.
I was surprised that AirAsia, being a budget airlines has their Skyshop selling some of the branded items..
Approaching Kota Kinabalu runway for landing - passing Gaya Island.
It was a smooth 2 hours and 30 minutes flight. To me it was a comfortable flight as I had 3 seats to myself since the aircraft was not full. I may fly AirAsia again when the new LCCT is completed by mid 2013. It's a real hassle to use the present LCCT as it is so crowded especially at the check-in and drop bag counters. Boarding process is another laidback. The AirAsia fares are not really cheap. They are compatible to other regional airlines when booking and purchase is done in advance online.
