NEWS OF THE WEEK

It was very usual, that 2 17-metre-long whale was found stranded in shallow waters at Sungai Sitompok in Kuala Penyu, a few days ago. Whales are rare in Sabah water. The last one found beached and died was a 20 metre Bryde's whale near Pulau Gaya in December 2006. Its full skeleton is exhibited at the Sabah Museum.
According to the Kuala Penyu fisheries department, a team of 10 officers took more than 8 hours attempting to steer the whale to the open sea with the help of fishermen but without success. Because of the retreating tide, It eventually ended up stranded on the beach some 200 metres from where it was first found.
The Fire and Rescue Department team pumped seawater over the whale to keep it alive while waiting for the tide to come so that a second attempt could be made to free it . Unfortunately, the whale died before this could happened.
